You've seen it ... The production incident that wakes everyone up at 3 AM. The cryptic error that nobody can explain. The Slack channel lighting up with alerts and confusion. And then, like clockwork, the explanation surfaces: "I got this from Stack Overflow."
That phrase carried weight. It was supposed to be absolution. The code worked somewhere else ... on the internet, in a different context, for a different problem. How was anyone supposed to know it wouldn't work here? Copy without reading. Skip the context. Ship it. When it breaks, blame the source.
I've watched this play out for over two decades. Junior developers ... or honestly, anyone who didn't fully understand an issue ... would go to Stack Overflow, find a solution that seemed to work, paste it in, and move on. They didn't really understand what they'd copied. They didn't trace the logic. They didn't consider the edge cases. They just needed the problem gone, and there it was: a working-looking answer with a green checkmark and a few hundred upvotes.
And when that code inevitably came back broken ... when it failed under load, when it didn't handle the specific configuration of your system, when it quietly corrupted data for three weeks before anyone noticed ... the response was always the same: blame Stack Overflow.
The green checkmark was the new seal of approval. It didn't matter if the answer was outdated, if it solved a slightly different problem, or if it ignored the edge cases of your specific system. It had votes. It was accepted. That was enough.
We made a ritual of it. The shrug. The "well, it worked in the example." The collective acceptance that the fault lay with the source, not with the person who'd copied it without understanding.
The gap between copying from Stack Overflow and copying from an LLM is smaller than people pretend. Both require understanding. Both produce garbage when the user doesn't know what they're looking at.
The New Green Checkmark
Now it's Codex ... or Claude ... or Copilot ... or whatever AI assistant is writing code this week. The pattern hasn't changed ... only the target of our blame.
A junior developer copies AI-generated code into the codebase. It looks plausible. It compiles. It even passes the tests she ran locally. The syntax is clean. The variable names are reasonable. It looks like someone who knew what they were doing wrote it. She commits without reading it closely, without tracing the logic, without understanding the assumptions baked into the generation.
When it breaks in production ... when the edge cases emerge, when the context shifts, when the model's confident suggestion turns out to be subtly wrong in ways that only show up under real load ... the story comes out the same: "The model hallucinated."
Same shrug. Same passing of responsibility. We swapped one external authority for another, as if the source of the code mattered more than the judgment of the person who shipped it. As if "the AI got it wrong" is any different from "Stack Overflow got it wrong."
The tool isn't the problem. It never was.
Accountability Has Always Been Lacking
This isn't really about AI or Stack Overflow. It's about something deeper and more uncomfortable in our industry ... accountability has always been lacking.
We've tried to address this with blameless post-mortems and retrospectives. The intent is good ... you want to have a fruitful conversation without pointing fingers, to learn without creating defensiveness, to build psychological safety so people will actually speak up about what went wrong. I understand the intent behind it: you want to be able to have a real conversation about failure without everyone going into self-preservation mode.
But even keeping things blameless has its own struggle. At some point, somebody has to be held accountable. You can't build a culture of ownership if nobody ever owns anything. You can't learn from mistakes if the system is designed to diffuse responsibility so thoroughly that no individual ever has to sit with the weight of a bad decision.
Blameless doesn't mean consequence-less. Learning doesn't mean excusing. We got so good at making people feel safe that we forgot to make them feel responsible.
I was talking to a CEO the other day, and he cut through all the noise ... all the debates about AI tooling, all the concerns about productivity, all the hand-wringing about the future of software engineering ... with a phrase that stuck with me: "Slop in, slop out."
None of these things are magic ones. They're there to help us, but at the end of the day, we have to own it.
It's brutal and true. Feed garbage understanding into any tool ... Stack Overflow, an LLM, a junior developer you're not mentoring ... and you'll get garbage out. No tool fixes the fundamental gap between having code and understanding code. No amount of AI-generated confidence replaces the hard work of reading, thinking, and truly comprehending what you're about to ship.
It's Tough to Own Things
Let me be honest about something ... it's tough to own things.
I don't personally always like to own it, because it makes it feel uncomfortable. When you mess up, you have to sit in that emotion of feeling uncomfortable. You have to feel the weight of it. The embarrassment. The realization that you could have done better, should have known better, should have slowed down.
That's why a lot of people don't like conflict in general. It's easier to deflect, to find the external reason, to point somewhere else. The model hallucinated. The Stack Overflow answer was wrong. The requirements weren't clear. The deadline was unrealistic. There's always something.
But here's what I've learned ... that uncomfortability is healthy. It's in that discomfort that we actually grow. It's the signal that you're pushing against your current limits, that you're being asked to be bigger than you were yesterday.

I've been extremely uncomfortable over the last three months. I'm going through things in my career that I've never had to go through, and it's felt tough. Real tough. The kind of tough that keeps you up at night, that makes you question what you're doing, that makes you want to find something ... anything ... to blame.
But yesterday, I was on a walk, and something clicked. These are the moments where I grow the most. These uncomfortable, uncertain, can't-see-the-other-side moments.
It reminded me of earlier in my career, when I was taking on architectural roles when I was nowhere near ready. I had no business being in those rooms, making those decisions, carrying that weight. I was too junior. I didn't know enough. The imposter syndrome was real and justified. But I did it anyway. I took ownership. I took accountability. And I learned like no other before.
Those were the moments that built me. Not the comfortable ones. Not the times when I knew exactly what I was doing and executed flawlessly. The times when I was in over my head, when I had to figure it out, when I had to own the consequences of my decisions ... those are the times that taught me what I'm capable of.
The Uncomfortable Truth
So here's the uncomfortable truth ... the gap between copying from Stack Overflow and copying from an LLM is smaller than people pretend.
Both require understanding. Both reward the person who reads carefully, who asks "why does this work?" ... and "what are the assumptions here?" ... and "how would this fail?" Both produce garbage when the user doesn't know what they're looking at.
We've spent a decade blaming Stack Overflow for our copy-paste mistakes. Now we're spending our energy blaming AI. Everyone just changed who they blame.
The pattern is the problem. The abdication of responsibility is the problem. The assumption that there's a shortcut to understanding ... that someone else (or something else) can do the thinking for you.
There isn't.
The tool isn't the problem. The problem is what we expect the tool to fix for us. The belief that if we just find the right source ... the right answer ... the right model ... the right framework ... we can skip the hard part.
You can't.
Own it.
